How to Test Frying Oil Temp without a Thermometer
Most deep-fried recipes require heating your oil to 180–190 degrees Celsius before dropping anything in. This can sound quite impossible if you don’t have a cooking thermometer, but a few easy techniques can help you determine when your oil is ready—no equipment needed!
The Wooden Spoon/Chopstick Method
Despite the oil thermometer being widely available, many still use the wooden spoon/chopstick method to check for oil temperature.
All you have to do is dip the handle of your wooden spoon or the end of your chopstick into the oil. If bubbles steadily form around your spoon or chopstick, this is a sign that your oil is ready. If the bubbles rise up slowly, your oil is still too cool.
