Nothing beats traditionally made char siu—barbecued pork with a crimson sweet-and-savory glaze. Every bite is packed with meat and flavor and, surprisingly, char siu sauce is not that hard to make. It's just like any other barbecue; it's made with a sauce that doubles as a marinade.

If we can't go to a Chinese restaurant for authentic char siu, major supermarkets or Asian groceries have ready-made char siu sauce so we can enjoy its flavors at home. That said, it's not at all hard to make the stuff from scratch at home. This 5-ingredient char siu sauce recipe is proof.

  • 1 cup hoisin sauce
  • ¼ cup honey
  • ¼ cup soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp Chinese cooking wine
  • 1 ½ tbsp five-spice powder
1

Stir together hoisin, honey, soy sauce, Chinese cooking wine, and five-spice. Use as a glaze, dipping sauce, or coating for meats, vegetables, and/or proteins of choice.
