Chocolate crinkles, sometimes known as earthquake cookies, got their name from their crackled appearance. Before baking, the dark cookie dough gets rolled in powdered sugar. The cracks form while the cookies expand and firm up in the oven.

These cookies have a texture patterned Hungry Pac's fudgy, melt-in-your-mouth crinkles. Make them as big or as bite-sized as you want. These cookies make perfect gifts for your friends... or yourself.

  • ½ cup cocoa powder
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • ¼ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • 1 cup powdered sugar, for coating
1

Make cookie dough: Add cocoa powder, white sugar, and vegetable oil to a large bowl. Whisk to combine. Add eggs and whisk to incorporate. Add flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Whisk until a smooth batter forms. Chill dough in the fridge until firm enough to handle, about 2 hours.

2

Prepare for baking: Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat.

3

Coat cookie dough: Add powdered sugar to a shallow bowl. Remove dough from the fridge. Scoop out 1 tablespoon of dough and shape into a ball. Roll dough ball in powdered sugar and place on the prepared baking sheet. Repeat with remaining dough.

4

Bake: Bake cookies in the oven until just set, about 10 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cookies cool on the sheet for 10–15 minutes.
