It is often thought that coffee and tea—and the people who drink them—exist on opposite sides of the spectrum. One brilliant creation challenges this notion, combining the best of both worlds into one eye-catching treat: Starbucks’ Matcha & Espresso Fusion Teavana™ handcrafted beverage.

Made with matcha, milk, and and a shot of espresso poured on top right before the barista hands you your drink, each component forms a distinct layer and transitions into the next layer as they meet—resulting in an ombre-colored treat that’s become a hit with today’s visuals-loving generation and their social media feeds. A cup, however, will set you back by at least PHP155 for the smallest (“tall”) size—and that’s without any of the coffee chain’s pastries to nibble on the side.

But this drink is dead-easy to make at home—it’s best if you’ve got a good machine that can give you a shot of espresso, even the powdered stuff dissolved in water works in a pinch. With that, plus a few other ingredients—milk, matcha powder, and a clear glass if you must take document it for Instagram (though really, any tall cup will do), you’re roughly ten minutes away from sipping away on your own Teavana drink.

  • ¼ cup matcha powder
  • ⅓ cup water, warm
  • 1 cup ice cubes
  • ½ cup full cream milk
  • 1-2 shots espresso
1

Make matcha: Combine matcha and warm water in a shallow bowl or matcha bowl (chawan). Whisk with a bamboo whisk (chasen) or milk frother until fully incorporated.

2

Assemble drink: Add ice cubes in a glass. Pour matcha into the glass, followed by milk and espresso. Serve.
